A comparison of responses to the mental health part of the 2013 & 2016 student surveys.

how can it change?

the competitiveness isn't something that can be avoided anymore. when you look at any story about our generation, the situation is dismal.

the first generation to earn less than their parents

debt

gross underemployment, not only in arts, but science and engineering also?

science, engineer, law are all no longer good. only cs, finance, and medicine are left. and compared to the other two, cs is still the the easy one.

and with increasing inequality, housing prices, and automation and decreased income growth, how can anyone still believe it will become better? if you are not at the top, just like in an mmo or mobage, how can you ever catch up? there is no level cap in real life.

and yes, a successful career is everything. regardless of universal health care, wealth determines health, and the health of your children even more so. even if you think, "money is not happiness", and it is, when you look at the needs most correlated with happiness, four of them are learning, autonomy, using one's skills, and respect. is that not exactly what a makes cali so desired? how can you have autonomy if you have to worry about your job or bills? how can you have learning and using one's skills doing mundane work when you trained for four or five years to solve challenging problems? so how can you be happy if you are not successful?

when you see this kind of situation, how can you think anything other than "i have to be the top"?
