Compass Box Asyla Blended Scotch [Review #19]

Compass Box Asyla Blended Scotch [Review #19]

I have thoughts on reviews. They are here.

And the blends go on....Compass Box has been somewhat better than the rest with Great King Street Artisan Blend being my favourite so far. The Asyla is made from 50% East Lowland single grain, 23% highland single malt, 22% speyside single malt and 5% from a second speyside single malt. Aged in first fill american oak barrels. Non-chill filtered and no colour added. Sounds okay. But will it blen...oh, shit, that's an affirmative.

ABV:40%

Price: $43.76+tax for 5 50mL samples and boatload of packaging.

Conditions: Neat, glencairn. Halfway through I added several mL of water.

Colour: Light. Lite? pale.

Nose: Light and thin with the nose. Flowery. Fresh oak. Pinot grigio. Touch of vanilla. Flower smells dominate. With water the oak comes out and the vanilla comes to the foreground.

Weight/Body: Light. Wet, water. Runs down the side and off the tongue. Not as thin as most of the blends so far but not substantial.

Palate: Bitter. Grassy, fresh cut flower stems. Oak. With water there is hidden malt grain that reveals itself. Dusty books come out with water which was a surprise. As you work through the glass lemons are hard to ignore in front of the palate.

Finish: Faint spices, pepper. With water soft fruit and vanilla shows up. The finish is rather dry.

Conclusion: The decision to add water was fortunate as it revealed more. This grew on me. It is subtle. Not overpowering at all. There is gentle spice under the floweral qualities and the vanilla and lemons are nicely balanced. I don't think it would be a daily drinker but it could be something when you want to drink slow over an extended session.

80/100
