illuminating and surprising response.

if your goal is only to make money doing these images, then, you are doing the right thing for you.

essentially you reap whatever you sow. you can think of it this way. you've mastered a kind of lowest-common-denominator baseline. if you fail to start trying to resist now, when you look back, it may feel as if some of your life has been stolen from you.

i'm of the opinion that people who demand the kind of artwork you think they go for, with NO flexibility, aren't worth working with. and the people who buy it, aren't the reason the trends exist. they simply don't know what good is, and developers have failed to provide it (not universally, but on average). i think that people will buy the highest quality perceivable thing that is available, no matter how lame it is compared to stuff from the past. people are really charitable if a thing has enough production value and some amount of diversion / addiction. but that's a pretty low bar to leap. so what's left? trying to find a way to make what YOU like that is ALSO popular and marketable. that's what i mean by "resisting".

because i'm stubborn and highly principled, i'm taking the very, very high road. i don't get to enjoy all the wealth and popularity of my peers. instead i've been working part time to support myself while i work on being a better artist, musician, game designer, and working on a vision of a different set of priorities - which btw takes maturity that i didn't have at age 20 to know the right thing to do. money is still a motivator for me, though. i hope that whatever i accomplish in the next 30 or so years will both let me retire in comfort and help the medium grow up.
