concept vs combat design for characters?

If you want some concept players, below are some from my current group, along with the hero forge renders of my christmas gift to them.

Unfortunately I can't contribute personally, because I'm DMing and I don't want to ruin the good ones for my players, but I can give up one character: Old Ben - an eldritch knight built to introduce a faction. He's an old protector in a world where magic is prosecuted, and I used the aging rules from 3.5 for his stat line. He'll be an interesting character.

Copy pasta from concept emails from my group:

Race: Drow
Class: Wizard
Alignment: Neutral-Evil
Background: Parents sent me to become an apprentice with a famed necromancer and carry on the evil family name. I applied myself to studying the dark arts, but unfortunately the apple fell a little far from the tree. Evil does not come naturally to me, no matter how hard I try. I want to be bad. But, honestly, I'd rather curl up in a corner with a cup of tea and read about murdering innocents to feed my demon thralls than actually go through with it.
Personality Traits: There's nothing I like more than a good mystery.
Ideals: The path to power and self-improvement is through knowledge.
Bonds: I promised my family I would do them proud.
Flaws: Most people scream and run when they see a demon. I stop and take notes on its anatomy

Name: Pigeon
Race: Human
Class: Rogue (Thief)
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Background: Raised by the streets, Pigeon learned the art of theft as a means of survival. He found himself to be outstandingly adept at identifying worthy targets and procuring their most valuable asset. Completely self-trained, he has adapted techniques not yet seen by the guilds.
Personality Traits: The first thing I do in a new place is note the locations of everything valuable—or where such things could be hidden.
Ideals: I will do whatever it takes to become wealthy.
Bonds: I align myself with whomever best serves my needs. I will become the greatest thief that ever lived.
Flaws: When faced with a choice between money and my friends, I usually choose the money.
