Concerned that comprehensible input isn't going to help me learn a language.

I'm very flattered. I spent my teens almost fully immersed in the language, and I'd argue I'm better at expressing myself as well. However, the lack of use of my native language has taken its toll as it has hindered my ability quite a bit over the years. Often than not, I find myself scrambling for words and literally translating them from English back to the native language, at times not even being able to think of a word or an expression.

What's helped me tremendously is writing a lot of business emails. I know right, sounds quite boring and tedious, but it really expands your vocabulary, formal communication, and how to structure concise sentences. If you're not in such a position, I'd highly recommend journaling and trying to incorporate new words, phrases, or synonyms, and highlighting those words which you'll review afterward.
