Congress Won’t Be Able to Ban Assault Weapons Anytime Soon. Sen. Chris Murphy Has Another Idea. He proposes refusing to fund counties that aren’t following current gun control laws.

The number of people who think gun rights should be limitless is exceptionally small. There can be a large, bipartisan consensus on what common sense limitations are. Universal background checks, enforcing existing laws. I think you could get a strong majority even for "assault weapons" if you define the weapon as rounds per minute. Hunting doesn't need 100 rpm guns, nor self defense.

To get around the gun show loophole and similar problems (like parents giving guns to kids or a domestic abuser forcing their partner to buy them a gun), we could consider a background check on ammunition purchases instead of guns.

Once ammunition is used, it's gone. Eventually you'll have to buy more. And that should be where we check someone. Require manufacturers to have tracking of some kind, even if it's just serial numbers, so we can identify stolen ammo.

I'm open to debate and discussion on these ideas, from the left and the right. What have I proposed that's unrealistic and won't work? What have I proposed you can get behind?
