Contacting faculty before applying to graduate programs?

I am answering in your other thread as well. Some schools specifically say contacting faculty will not help with admissions. At those schools those professors may simply reply expressing interest in you, tell you they have no control over admissions and encourage you to apply. I did this once and was not accepted to that schools program. On the other hand, I contacted faculty at a school and was admitted by the ones I contacted. In that case I believe my contact did help with being admitted. You’ll have to read the department website and check how they determine admissions. Some professor state do not contact them and they don’t have a say in admissions on their page. Consider it a school-by-school basis.
