Content at top v. bottom of page

I'm presuming that by "content" you mean optimised text that only really serves purpose for search engines. If so it's probably unlikely to have a positive effect if you stick it at the top.

I would also be very wary of taking any conclusions based on the experiment you describe. If the risk is low and work involved is minimal then try it out.

Google will crawl content further down a page. But it may devalue it in the same way as it seems to devalue links further down a page. They want to recreate the behaviour of a user with their crawler and users often won't scroll down a long page. Having said that, nobody really knows how they do this stuff
