it's a risk we take living in NJ. he told me two stories of people he had defended that made me re-think gun ownership in NJ.

one was a home built other, the guy caught an AWB charge that was dropped after he spent almost $5k in fees. the police had taken the mans guns as part of a TERPO due to a messy divorce. he eventually got them back and took possession/ sold them for the guy who never wanted to deal with gun ownership again.

the other was someone who had a shoddy pin and weld, and the police literally wrenched on the muzzle brake till it broke free and twisted.. they added the AWB charge that was again later dropped but other charges stuck (it was a bigger case).

others are cool and all but i don't need them to defend my life. if i do need to defend my life with it i really don't want to give the prosecutors any leverage and having a grey area gun will do that (as well as things like punisher skull cerakotes, etc) so i don't do that. there's a whole lot of reasons to not do it and i really don't have many reasons to do it... other then just because. to each their own.

LGS in nj sell other's that have "opinion letters" from the NJSP. literally a packet with every part listed and measured. home built others don't have the same.
