Continuous Reforestation - Automated reforestation for carbon sequestration on a global scale.

I work in the Canadian reforestation industry from both a management perspective and as a professional tree planter. For these sort of schemes (which I’m seeing more and more of) to work as a means of carbon capture I see a number of operational issues (Canada centric but I’m sure can be compared to the EU)

1.) access to land. Whose land is being planted? If it’s logged land, than you are just losing carbon storage. Is it public land - who makes the decision? Is it a wetland complex? - should we even be planting trees here? In a moment of agricultural instability should we be planting farmers fields? Lots of questions here, beyond the green washing of consumer decision making.

2). Reforestation of native grasslands. I’m already seeing loss of what native grasslands to afforestation measures. Due to fire suppression we are losing more and more grasslands to carbon captures plantations. Grasslands are so essential in climate change mitigation and we often forget about them.

3). What species are being planted? Are they ecologically suited?
