Ethan, if you’re reading. The reason why the rural people vote for Trump is that their culture/way of life is dying. The salesmen, ‘hardworking’ Americana farmer/factory types used to get by without expanding their technical skills but now, they see their farms dwindling (increased property tax from urban sprawl; industrial farms becoming way more efficient) and their factory jobs being replaced by immigrants willing to work for half the wage.

With the tech revolution, they can now also see on FB/Twitter the bookworm, “elitist” types winning and their children gravitate to the cities because of the new wealth/opportunities. The people left behind HATE that as their towns become more decrepit, and those left are either the local elite or the dropouts who demonize the ‘other side’ for their problems as their standard of living gets worse.

The only way to remedy this situation is to bring the fruits of the tech innovation to these rural areas. With work from home becoming more popular, this is now more possible than ever. The government just needs to provide the right incentives (Special Economic Zones, modern Homesteading) so that these rural areas can become revitalized.
