Controllers and those "non-rechargeable" batteries that everyone seems to complain about...

No complaints here. What are the alternatives? Proprietary batteries that'll I need to spend $60 on some spares? No thanks.

There are a lot of swappable standard li-ion batteries. Especially thanks to vaping growing popular, 18650's are everywhere and cheap.

is there some technical reason that can't also be done with AAs?

EVERYTHING can be done with AA's, and SHOULD be done with AA's. AA batteries can do anything you want. See r/AAMasterRace to see what I mean. They are compatible with almost everything, and it's only a matter of time before someone makes an AA-to-18650 adapter to finally make it so you don't have to choose between those two popular batteries anymore. AA batteries are potentially compatible with AAA, AA, C, D, F, 18650, 26650, 32600, 32650, or any other cell you can make an adapter or spacer for.

AA batteries are the ULTIMATE battery, and you can probably use them in any device they will fit in as long as the battery is cylindrical, and user-replaceable.
