Coolest Industry / Life Advice?

  1. I work at a Silicon Valley startup and it's super interesting. My job title is technically "Senior Revenue Accountant" but really I only spend about 1 week a month (close week) focusing on the accounting behind revenue (like making recs, posting journal entries, etc.). Most of my time is spent on custom projects where I work closely with practically everyone at the company, ranging from finance, engineering, sales, product teams... earlier this week I met with one of the product managers to talk about how we could improve a functionality in our product to deal with refunds because it was causing issues on the accounting/finance side. What I said in this hour long meeting (keeping in mind I'm just an accountant) could directly change how our product looks and acts to 10k+ of our current users. I thought that was pretty cool.

  2. One of my managers always used to say, if you can understand a company's revenue, then you understand the company. I audited clients that used all sorts of revenue recognition methodologies, ranging from SaaS companies, construction companies, service companies (with T&M / cost plus / fixed fee contracts), software companies, inventory-based companies, real estate companies, etc. So I at least have a basic knowledge of how revenue works at these various industries and could probably BS my way through an interview on the technical side. But it would be a challenge for me to try to work at a non-profit, or financial services company, or some niche industry like payday lenders because I have absolutely no understanding of their revenue or any other aspect of their business.
