Coronavirus: Senate Republicans block emergency sick leave bill as outbreak spreads across US

To be somewhat fair, they wanted to make employers foot the bill for it which for many businesses would effectively shut them down, especially since many of these places like smaller restaurants are already losing a ton of money due to lost sales, so while those employees may get paid for 2 weeks they wouldn't have a job to go back to.

I know that this should be a basic benefit that is required for all employees, the fact of the matter is that restaurants cannot afford to offer it, they can't increase menu prices to afford it because then it would be too expensive to eat there so they would lose all of their customers. Most restaurants barely make enough money just to be open, they make so little profit that they can't afford to give employees any benefits AT ALL, the only 2 people in most restaurants that get benefits other than the owners are the front of house manager and the head chef, everybody else gets nothing. The only exception are large chain places that have extreme volume and fast food that sells overpriced food made of cheap low quality ingredients but even then they often don't give regular workers any benefits.

The point is that the people who NEED this are the people in jobs that simply don't make enough profit to be able to afford it, especially when they are no longer making any money whatsoever.
