Corporate radio conspired to keep Grimes songs off the air: "It was met with such disdain. People were like, 'Who is this? We have no idea who she is. She’s weird. What’s with these weird videos? Why is she dressed like that?... There was so much to critique about her and nothing about the music."

And Gaga was marketing it toward a POP radio audience, which "alternative" mythology likes to imagine as normies with no appreciation of anything subversive. Yet she had success on pop radio with meat dresses, while Grimes sitting on top of a shelf in a video is too extreme for the "alt" (right?) radio. Amazing.

Supposedly, "alternative" claims to welcome weird or non-mainstream artists, but the reality is that "alt," in its long path toward merging with fascism, has been embracing the squarest, straightest, most normie acts ever since Cobain died. The original conception of alternative was dead by the late '90s (Radiohead described alt radio as "fridge buzz" where all the songs sounded the same, and the reason Kid A had no singles is that they no longer identified with that blandly macho rock radio format), but it's still amazing how much lower the alt radio stations have sunk in the 21st century. At least in the late '90s and early '00s, you needed to pretend to be "weird" in order to get alternative radio play. Now you need to be a very well adjusted, happy, rich, suburban straight white cis North American or British male with nothing to express.
