I corrected my boss on what "extern" meant in a public meeting. I was correct, and now I think I embarrassed him. Should I avoid correcting people in the future?

Yeah If I want to correct someone then I say “I think it might be this but it’s been a while and wanna double check” or something along those lines.

However I’ve gotten called out by some people for not being direct enough. The people that call me out tend to be a bit aggressive though. I’ve seen devs be afraid to bring up issues to these people when they aren’t sure about something though. So honestly I think it’s best to not be as direct when correcting someone.

I’ve realized it’s best to stay neutral in these scenarios. I’d rather not get into situations such as one OP has gotten into. Try not to make enemies as much as possible.
