The Cosmic Lighthouse

Madrigal stood on the edge of the great tower. She had been a watcher for longer than time had words, and she enjoyed the post more than anything she could fathom.

The ships that brought the new life to dust balls across creation had been sparser lately, and it left her feeling lonely. She enjoyed, since she was a child, to hear teh stories of far off, alien worlds.

She stood on the balcony admiring the cloudscape. Below the coverage, entities of various shapes worked tirelessly to produce the elements of life. Madrigal never got to see them, outside of their transportation containers that is, but she always felt a tingle through her body when one was close. They were electric with life.

In the distance, a ship approached. Fast. Entirely too fast to actually stop in the dock like normal. Madge felt the pain of helplessness and terror hit at once. She sounded the alarm.

With ships landing constantly, protocol had to exist for the potential wrecks. No sooner did she press the alarm did all the clouds get sucked out of the sky to give a clear view of the approaching ship. This was a rare protocol, and she took no enjoyment in doing it.

Soon, the ship corrected its course, to Madge's confusion. Then, it opened fire on the city.

Lasers pelted buildings as photon rockets carved massive swaths in the layout. Madge looked on in horror as the attacking ship continued to assault the city. A small pod shot out of the back and made a B-line for her tower. Madge prepared the lockdown protocol, but the pod was too fast. A grey entity of considerable height approached her on the balcony.

"Are you the watcher?" It thought to her. The sensation was like a pressure in her skull. It made her feel a little sickly.

"I am." She responded in her thoughts.

"This city has has been a plague to the galaxy."

"How so?"

"It has created these." It showed a hologram of smaller, pink entities. "They are dangerous beyond anyone's comprehension.

"Why is that?"

"They experience the thing that all of the known universe has outlawed - jealousy."

"But, what do we do?"

"It's illegal to kill primitive species, however, killing their originators is fine if they are space-faring." It blinked. "I have no ill-will towards you. You aren't privy to the actions of these fools. But, be warned: they will be wiped out."

It turned to leave. Madge reacted on pure instinct. Using her cane, she smashed the creatures skull in, dropping it in a heap. It looked back at her, and left the singular thought "Why?"

She replied, applying a large amount of pressure. It caused the creatures head to swell and bleed. "This is my world. These are my children." It's head popped, spewing gore everywhere.

She turned towards the ship, reaching with her awareness. She felt every life inside of it began to increase the pressure. The ship careened towards a cliff, exploding on impact.

Madrigal smiled. She had protected her babies.
