Couple who treated ill son with maple syrup — not medicine — blame ambulance workers for boy’s death [x-post]

The paramedic's testimony states his truck was not equipped with infant/neonatal BVM and infant-sized endotracheal tubes. He testified he was able to provide effective respirations with a pediatric BVM and he intubated with a ETT meant for a child 8-10 years old. For those unfamiliar with BVM and ETT sizes, having too-large pediatric equipment for an infant is not ideal but it works. The larger BVM is a complete non-issue. The mask is slightly larger but is 100% capable of fitting the face (some dedicated neonatal teams even prefer to use larger BVMs upside-down as you can get a really good seal this way). A too-large ETT is more difficult to insert and has potential to cause airway trauma from overinflation. However the paramedic testified he was able to insert the tube into the airway properly, and he verified the tube was placed correctly and providing oxygen into the lungs. I'm assuming the statement/accusation that the paramedics did not provide oxygen for eight minutes was pulled from the ambulance call report as duration between arrival on scene and intubation.
