CPS workers of reddit, what was the worst case you have seen?

Late response, but I can remember the details of this case really clearly after a long while working in a different industry.

I used to work indirectly with Child Protective Services, so while I wouldn't see the cases up close I would read the documentation, police interviews, social workers statements, photos etc. By and large the cases were relatively minor.

The one that made me feel sick I'll try and keep kind of vague for privacy. Young couple in their twenties, mother had newborn twins. One baby, the boy, had been admitted to hospital due to unspecified injuries but believed to be an accident. Social services kept an eye on things, but they had no reason to suspect foul play.

Then the infant sister appeared in hospital with a shattered pelvis and broken arm. Police were involved. The father of the child was immediately suspect, but tried to claim that the baby must have an illness causing their bones to be weak. When the infant did not have brittle bones he then claimed she fell from the sofa.

What actually happened was the mother was out of the house for the evening, and the father had been left to babysit. The baby girl wouldn't stop crying, so he raged out and slammed her on the floor, and stamped on her - basically destroying the bones in her hips.

It also came out that the baby boy's injuries were due to the father kicking him across the room.
