High functioning autism is an outdated term. As a tumblr user once said, (I could link if requested)

"The problem with functioning labels is that they grade autistic people on a black and white scale from the prespective of allistics.

Autism is a spectrum and on a spectrum there are many points. You cannot rank a person as high or low when autism is multifaceted.

An autistic person could be very nonverbal but a genius in processing and applying logic and problem solving.

An autistic person could be extremely socially vocal but have motorical issues and problems with facial expression.

An autistic person could be incrediblly artistically intelligent and be amazing at emotional analysis and empathy but cannot for the life of them make eye contact or order at a fast food chain if they have to talk to the cashier.

Ranking an autistic person from high to low is like trying to place every color in the spectrum on a bar from red to blue. Its just fractional and inaccurate and patronizing to be reduced to how much of an inconvenience we are to neutotypicals instead of what autism ACTUALLY does and how it affects our abilities and limitations."
