I’ve actually come out of a year and a bit long psychiatric stay, and even now you meet some really, really odd people. Guys and girls alike. I’m sorry you had that experience- I promise not all us crazies are like that (god I feel like one of those “not all men!!!!” people).

You do lose everything though. I lose my place at uni, friends, support from most of my family, and I nearly lost my life numerous times. Being in those sorts of places drives you crazier than you were when you came in. Inpatient treatment in the U.K. is fucking awful. I can’t even describe the sorts of things I saw and the amount of abuse going on (between patients and patients, and staff and patients). It’s madness.

I’m blessed now to be well enough to go back into education. I’ve got a loving mum and boyfriend who is the ONLY partner I’ve ever had who hasn’t treated me like shit. I’m very sorry your friend didn’t come out and see the other side. Life’s a pretty wonderful thing.
