Crimson doubles is fun if you aren't just playing to win

Here's my story:

I plan my CD 'date' with a buddy for last night. He's played for a few months and mains Stormcaller (LL 313), so he's good at PvP by default (it's a joke, people, calm down). He's only played Crucible for the last two IBs and some dailies for the marks. I only play Titan (LL312), since beta. Lifetime Crucible k/d of 1.1, done Trials twice (4 cards total). I knew what to expect, he had no clue.

First match, Anomaly... pretty sure he hadn't been there before, maybe once or twice. First round, enemy camping Special. We rumble around, lose a close-ish one. I finish with 8 kills, he has 0. "Sorry man... sorry... can't believe I didn't even get one kill... sorry" To which, I reply, "DUDE, this is just for fun, don't sweat it. You'll get some kills, we'll finish some bounties, and maybe score some good gear".

We talk about ghosts, and I tell him that I'd like one in the high 3-teens. Mine are 313, 314, and 314. He goes on to tell me that that he has like 5 between 315 and 319. <facepalm>

Next match, Cauldron... he doesn't know / remember this map at all, which is tough. I get 5 kills, he gets 2 this time.

He asks why people are using Icebreaker, and how I know we're playing "Trials people" (i.e. Adept weapons and Trials emblems).

This time, the SBMM is feeling sorry for us (another joke, people), and we're matched up for our first win on Frontier. He had obviously been there before. Callouts started improving, we were talking gameplans before each round, remembering to pickup Special, and generally having more fun (ok, yes, because we were winning).

Through the next few matches, there were ups and downs, but the best part is when we were matched against a pretty equal team on Asylum, against at least one Thornie. First round we spawn A-side, I rush upstairs, get one soft... and notice I'm a 1v2, my buddy doesn't know this map. I die, and start calling out. Both enemies rush to our spawn, he gets one in the doorway, and then the other, he goes nuts over chat... then dies to DoT. "YES! I got them first!"... sorry man, doesn't work that way... draw. We lose the next four rounds. We win the next two, and he gives an "epic comeback starts right here", ala Peyton Manning's Nationwide melody. Then, everything clicks, we go full ham, and launch his epic comeback to win, 5-4-1. I finish with 9 kills, he has 8 (enemy is 11 & 5). He goes bonkers over chat.

The last few we played were wins and losses. Mixes of clutch kills and revives, and getting the floor wiped with our Guardian corpses.

The last match for the night, Destiny was trying to tell us something. We get matched up against a 320 Warlock and a 319 Titan on Timekeeper. It wasn't even funny (in a yeah, it was pretty funny kinda way). It was the first time my buddy played on Timekeeper. I told him to just stay close to spawn. We got them 2v1 once, I was calling, and I hear, "I don't know where I'm at, I think I'm downstairs somewhere". In the end, it felt good to even get 5 kills against these guys... who were obviously outside our league, but we weren't even mad... GG, better players.

All-in-all, I got one purple gauntlet engram to drop, he got one purple chest. No ghosts, and no Crucible weapons. It didn't even dawn on me that it was the Weekly, so I missed out on 26 marks.

But, we both had an absolute blast playing. We laughed, we grumbled, and we cheered. He was getting salty for not getting high level drops, but his chest engram turned into HoPF. I got some good (although maybe not 100% applicable) Trials experience, so it ended well.

TL;DR I had fun, my buddy had fun, because it was fun.
