The Crimson Ghost: What it means to be a fan of performers who hate their fans [essay by a philosopher and Misfits fan]

OK... first, let me say that music is subjective, and these are only my opinions. If you like the Only version of the Misfits, man, more power to ya'. Everyone should listen to what they enjoy. That said, the Danzig era Misfits were what I grew up on. I am 46. They were one of my very favorite bands in high school. They sang about things I liked. They came across as dangerous. Their songs were catchy as hell. When Jerry announced he was reforming the Misfits, i was first in line. Then, I got Famous Monsters and it seemed completely fake to me. The Misfits were a punk band. Graves is not a punk singer. The songwriting was weak. It honestly seemed like Jerry and Doyle sat around and thought "Hmmm... what are some movies Glenn would write about? Lets figure some out and write some songs about them." Every song was pretty straight forward and unimaginative, lyrically. Jerry has said there will be no cursing on any of the Misfits albums from then going forward, and it is because it is marketed at kids. If you are putting limits on what you say and do in your art so that you will be more marketable, that is the very definition of selling out. Then came the endless (and I mean ENDLESS) items with Misfits logos on them. Shoelaces. Frisbees. Glasses. Pencils. Notebooks. Backpacks. It became a joke. The Misfits were an important and vital band and Jerry has sold all of that to make a buck.

Once things didn't work out with Graves, Jerry took over singing. Man, that dude can't carry a tune to save his life. Maybe he has gotten better in the last decade, but i doubt it. That Project 1959 or whatever it was called is almost unlistenable. I suspect they put that out because their songwriting was not up to snuff (much like how the Ramones put out the cover album Acid Eaters after Dee Dee left, as he was the best songwriter of the group).

There was a time i would have killed for a true reunion with Danzig. I have seen Danzig do his Misfits set several times and it is fantastic. But i think Jerry's integrity is blown to older fans. I mean, his own brother Doyle has left and tours with Glenn instead of the Misfits.

So... that is why I don't care for them. They are a weak shadow of what they were, and their sound and image has been corrupted to be the equivalent of punk goes Disney. Also, Glenn Danzig wrote songs that were mind blowing in their simplicity yet so far beyond anything the newer version of the Misfits have ever done as to be really beyond compare.

Again, to each his own. I understand why people like the new Misfits. They were designed to be approachable and likeable so it only makes sense. But that is what I don't like.
