Critics of the Rothko Chapel Say It’s Too Somber—Will a Pricey Restoration and Skylight Change That?

The chapel was originally supposed to be built on the University of St. Thomas campus. I’m just stating a fact.

“Early in 1965, the two gave the artist 250,000 dollars in commissions for a series of large wall murals. These were intended for a chapel which the de Menils planned to build for St. Thomas Catholic University in Houston, where Dominique de Menil was the director of the Art Department.”

The idea that the chapel might be used for some type of shadowy purpose was brought up by the poster above me and I was having fun with that. Obviously, I don’t believe Satanic rituals are held there. The religiosity or lack thereof of Rothko Chapel makes no difference to me. I’m not religious and don’t believe in supernatural phenomenon so I don’t have a skin in this game.

“I personally can respect and appreciate what I THINK it represents, but unfortunately I feel it's symbolism goes WAAY over the heads of what most of it's visitors could articulate, but I suppose some understand it on a visceral, subconscious, level. I may be wrong, as well. Art has a thousand meanings to a thousand people.”

Good for you.
