While not as fucked as the states, sometimes I think our justice system is too focused on punishment and not on rehabilitation.

Is this guy a danger to society? Probably not. Will it be expensive to keep him incarcerated? Yes. And will being incarcerated help him or the victim? Probably not.

I think a much better approach is some incarnation (there should be some punishment) but the remainder of his sentence should focus on community service, anger management and other ways to help him and society as a whole.

And he should absolutely never work in law enforcement again. Cops do need to be held to a higher standard and this sort of egregious violation of those standards does not warrant a second chance.
