I feel like I’m on somewhat the same page as you here. Many people I’ve spoken to in the Middle East are absolutely floored by how much the US supports Israel. As they live in a bubble where they hear every bad thing Israel has ever done and minimize the bad things Muslims have done to Israel, they have to assume that the American government supports Israel because of some kind of conspiracy. To varying degrees of success, I generally argue for Occam’s razor here: you don’t need a giant conspiracy to explain why American politicians support Israel so much. Even leaving out the money and the weapons and the geopolitics, the truth is that - IME - most Americans support Israel, and support continuing foreign aid to ensure their military dominance over the surrounding countries. No conspiracies necessary - it’s just that they inhabit a media bubble with background assumptions that many Middle Eastern Muslims wouldn’t imagine without being told.
