Custom Lineage convinces me that "free feat at level 1" should be the gold standard homebrew rule.

We went the opposite way from Tasha's with races, where our races are much MORE differentiated: for example, Dwarves get +2 to any two of STR/CON/WIS and -1 to DEX. Other races get INT bonuses, so we don't have to see any gnomes, and we redid Tiefling completely so that you get wicked bonuses but -2 CHA, because nobody is going to trust a devil person.

Everyone gets a free feat, though, because people here are right: it's fun. Variant human still gets a second one, and humans get another skill proficiency (they'll try anything!) in order to encourage people to play humans, because all of us want a more old-school feel where humans and human-adjacent races are the norm, plus none of us believes any of the others has the RP chops to pull off a cat person or whatever.
