Customers hate tipping before they’re served – and asking makes them less likely to return

Yeah, but sometimes that's something food service waiters/delivery struggle with sometimes (I used to work multiple delivery jobs).

Something I used to notice is that usually when we are delivering orders the latest, it's when we are actually working our hardest to get you your food, being way too busy and backed up, in fight/flight mode to get the job done, for hours at a time.

Keep that in mind sometimes if they show up late looking like they have been at war. I have seen customers a few times acknowledge they had called store and heard why I was so late, and tipped. Others, of course, get angry and say they're taking their tip back.

It's at least one extra factor you can look out for sometimes when you seem to be experiencing bad food service (at least in terms of lateness), and decide whether or not you think it's a good choice or not.
