To cut the cord....or to not cut the cord...help me decide!

I cut the cord about 1.5 years ago and love it. We can pickup 39 channels with the OTA antenna. I was up to $200/mo with cable, DVR, and internet and now I am down to about $70-$80. I have 24 Mbps internet and it is just fine for streaming. The answer to your question is the convenience and importance of having TV versus saving some money.

Here is my setup:

  • 1byone Omni-directional Amplified Outdoor Antenna for FM/VHF/UHF 60 Miles Range. The coax from the antenna is run into the cable box outside the house, connected to the existing grounding connector. I have ATT UVerse so the internet is run into the house on a different connector I guess.
  • 8-Port Bi-Directional Cable TV HDTV Amplifier Splitter Signal Booster with Passive Return. The antenna has a powered amplifier that is connected into the input of this amp before splitting it off to all of the rooms in the house.
  • Mediasonic Homeworx HW180STB 3 / 4 Channel HDTV Digital Converter Box with Recording and Media Player (New Version). This converts the coax to HDMI to run to the TV on my wall. You can connect an external hard drive to it and create a one channel DVR (watch or record).
  • Roku 3/4 in the rooms to stream content.
  • PlayStation Vue for channels that we use to watch when we had cable.
  • Amazon Prime to watch movies.

All of the items (except the Roku) were purchased from Amazon. During weather events the antenna is not reliable but we just switch over to streaming.
