Cycling in winter

Super important to invest in good front and rear lights and high-vis clothing. Most if not all cycle paths have road crossings and cars have a hard time seeing bikes. I was hit once at a crossing like this even with bike lights. That’s why high vis stuff and lights are crucial.

Metal studded tires are great to have but they tend to spray rust and dirt all over the bike so it’s a good idea to try and wash your bike as often as possible during the winter and get some chain lube that’s made for wet conditions. Winter is hell for bikes.

Not sure where you are in the country, but the bigger cities are pretty good about plowing cycling paths even in the dead of winter - particularly if they are high traffic paths used for commuting. Watch out for pedestrians on these paths because they are often mixed use.

Another tip is to slightly lower your tire pressure. This will give you better traction and have the added benefit of slightly slowing you down so you don’t ride like an idiot!

Stay safe and enjoy!
