Is the cynicism about pwBPD generally warranted?

Sorry...I don't know how to pull portions/quotes from other's comment(s).

"I actually think people with BPD have a fair amount of control over their actions. They can get help, and they can get better if they want to. It's just hard and unpleasant."

I concur. Yes, help is out there and pwBPD can get said help, if they want to. Not only is such treatment hard and unpleasant but also very expensive (usually not covered by insurance) and time consuming. Often takes a 2-3 year commitment twice a week...one group session and an individual appointment with a therapist. Plus, that's IF you have dbt groups/therapists in the area where you live. Often times there are pwBPD that WANT help & treatment but can't afford it and have difficulty finding help where they live. Again, not an excuse but a reality.

I try to put myself in their shoes (pwBPD) and I admit, I really feel for them. That doesn't mean I justify their behavior at all but if the tables were turned: (1.) Would I be able to find a bpd trained therapist and dbt group in my area? Yes. Fortunately, I would. (2.) Could I actually afford the necessary treatment? No, probably not.

Again...I'm not justifing the bpd's behavior but it really is an unfortunate "condition" for an individual to deal with on many, many levels.

I wouldn't wish bpd on my worst enemy.
