daddy issues

I'm going to be honest here and maybe come out as mean in my critique, so please don't read if you are sensitive about negative critique about your own works. I don't want you to feel bad because I'm a mean asshole.

I don't think this is that good of a poem. It's not necessarily the lack of rhymes, I think there can be amazing poetry without a single rhyme, and even without a structured metric too. But the diction too is just average. The scenes you paint are nothing out of the ordinary, nor are they scenes that touches me in any way. The only thing apparantly "remarkable" about this poem, is the concept, and how "taboo" it is. I am particulary frustrated with this poem, because it really isn't special, but because of its shock value, people (and I would bet a finger most are men, make of that what you will) praise it for absolutely no reason. There is no extraordinary imagery, no strong diction, no rhymes, no strong flow. My frustration not only comes from that, but also because I witness insanely good poetry from time to time, on this website, that doesn't even get a quarter of the attention this poem is getting. And I find that sad. I don't think there is anything wrong with writing about rape, sex, mommy issues, daddy issues, murder, whatever, I'm not easy to shock, and I think that type of stuff is a part of reality that deserves to be aknowledged. What I do have a problem with, is art being more valued than other amazing works of art, just because it happens to touch subjects like that. Suddenly nobody examines the poem itself, and just limit themselves to bask into its shock value and start believing there are layers of depth to it that aren't even there.

Now, please, don't take my words the wrong way. Firstly, art is subjective, it is an abstract thing that is difficult to judge and compare with other art. So where this poem didn't evoke anything to me, it might have for other people, and for very valid reasons too. When I critisize this poem, I'm projecting my subjective views and values onto it. Secondly, your poem did have an effect on me, it made me frustrated and angry, whether this was intentional or not from you, it doesn't matter. Your work caused an effect on me, and that is precisely what art is about!
