DAE feel like there’s a lot of misogyny in atheist circles?

Would Christians completely ignore Jesus' teachings were they not steeped in a culture based on patriarchy and empire?

Jesus's teachings are steeped in a culture of apocalyptic, world-denying, Greek philosophy-influenced, 1st century Jewish mysticism. The imperial version of Christianity only took shape when Christianity was adopted by imperial overlords. At its root, it's a religion of guys who don't wear shoes and won't have sex. Only a minority of Christians live that way because that sort of thing has a short lifespan in terms of creating widespread movements. It's a current that crops up in different forms, though. It's not a good thing, like the imperial version of Christianity isn't, either.

All strands of Christianity have to have some basis in the original teaching to call themselves Christian, even if most of the rest of them are about things that are antithetical to the original. Catholicism has the 'ew sex ew yuck sex' aspect pretty prominently. Some evangelical churches have the 'end is nigh' aspects front and centre. Some forms of Protestantism focus on Jesus saying, 'my way or the highway' in terms of going to heaven. Others focus on 'give to Caesar what is Caesar's...' Others still, 'the kingdom of heaven is within you'.

They actual texts of religion persist in this way, even after the culture of the churches changes around them.
