DAE think red velvet cake should taste a lot better than it does?

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method


1/2  cup                   shortening

1 1/2 cups sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 3 tablespoons chocolate milk powder 1-2 ounces red food coloring 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour 1 cup buttermilk 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 tablespoon vinegar

Sift together flour, salt, and chocolate milk powder. Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Add food coloring and vanilla. Mix vinegar, soda and buttermilk ( it will foam). Add alternately with the flour mixture. Grease and flour cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees about 30 minutes, til tester is clean. Makes 3- 8” or 2 -9” cakes. Slice cakes in half lengthwise making 4 or 6 layers. Frost.

Frosting

9 rounded Tablespoons flour
2 ¼ cups milk ½ tsp salt ¾ cup Crisco 1 ½ cups sugar 1 ½ sticks butter 1 tsp vanilla

Cook flour , salt, and milk til thick. Cover with plastic wrap or wax paper to prevent film. Cool completely, but do not refrigerate. Cream butter and Crisco. Add Vanilla. Add cooled mixture. Beat til Fluffy. Frost cooled cake.
