Two bagels are left in a bag. Someone eats one, a cinnamon raisin bagel. The other bagel remains in the bag. Suddenly, it is gone. The plastic bag is flittering in the wind, the paper bag sits uneasily atop a bed. But the bagel, the bagel is nowhere to be seen. The dog is near the site of the disappearance. There are no other suspects. Panic ensues, for raisins are toxic. The vet is called, the ASPCA poison control hotline is next, and oh did we panic and rush to the vet. Induced vomiting yields nothing and to the emergency vet we travel, for 24 hour monitoring is said to be vital. Worried and saddened and with a $2800 bill, we return home, though home with no dog feels like no home at all. The bringer of bagels sits at the table and we recount the details of our story, a story of a bagel with raisins. We talk of the one who ate the cinnamon raisin, “it wasn’t even good” she says. “You ate the cinnamon raisin bagel?” is the reply that’s she given, and we learn that the dog could not have eaten the raisins.

Because the other in the bag was really a sesame bagel. So to the ER vet we go to retrieve her, for there are no more concerns about kidney damage. And poor Maddie, well, she has forgiven us for our miscommunication.
