Cats are fluffy little assholes that somehow make you love them and be happy to serve their weirdest whims. They secretly love you too, but they are the tsundere of animals. You can't really train cats to listen consistently, so you just have to adjust to whatever they decide the rules are. They're charming and it's very fun to just watch them cat about - it never gets old watching them sit in boxes or try to climb every single thing that they can (and then fall off and put on a show of "I meant to do that"). Having a purring cat in your lap is one of the best feelings. Cats kind of play perpetual dread game where they know damn well they are the prize and you feel honored when they grace you with 10 minutes of their time (only on their terms of course, cats always hold frame). They're very low maintenance, although you do need to set aside some time to play with indoor cats.

Only had a dog when I was a kid, but it's closer to having a small child who thinks you are the greatest human being to ever live. I think they are overbearing and high-maintenance (always need to go home in the evenings to take them out, need to take them out even when the weather is awful, they constantly want attention and aren't great at just doing their own thing), but it is fun that you can take them places and do things with them. IMO it's insane that single young people get dogs now and I think you should only get one after you have kids, since your freedom and spontaneity are limited at that point anyways.
