Daily FI discussion thread - April 24, 2019

I've asked this before without specifics, but wanted to consult the wise minds at FI again. And yes, this may land me on r/PFJerk:

Want to buy a ~$27K fun car (Mustang GT) to drive about 2,500 miles a year. Insurance is probably $1,000? I take the bus to work.

  • Assets (Cash/Brokerage + Retirement/Kid College Fund + Home Equity): ~$1.1M
  • 1 already paid off economy 4-banger.
  • Liabilities: $182K (wife's student loan debt - waiting to be discharged through PLSF in a few years)
  • Avg. gross household income over last 3 years was $498K

Future unknown expense = child care which could be quite expensive, but still manageable.

Saved just north of 40% in 2018 - can I afford to get this car? Would pay cash.
