TL;DR: I do not know the etiquette: Is it acceptable to consider your travel costs the "gift" for a destination wedding, or should you still give a gift?

Deets: My friend is getting married in Asheville, NC. Everyone is a tad baffled by the choice, because most family is in either FL or the midwest (and the happy couple lives in CA). Anyway, Asheville is a nice location so I'm looking forward to that. That said, the costs for me and my SO to attend are looking like about $1,500. I just purchased the airfare and AirBnB yesterday. Breakdown:

  • 750 plane tickets for two
  • 300 no-frills AirBNB for 4 nights
  • 200 rental car (This is the one I'm least sure about -- I haven't rented a car in a long time so could be more or less than that)
  • 250 food/airport parking/etc

So it looks like we will spend at least 1500. What do you guys think -- should we also give a gift, or is attending enough? I am not sure what the etiquette is.
