I want to get rid of my car. It seems like such a tangled mess of other decisions that need to come first though.

  • I'd have to move, but I'm also thinking about getting a new job next June, so I'm not sure where I'd need to move to.

  • If I'm staying in my current city I need to sign a lease in January for a place I wouldn't move into until September (because our housing market is completely fucked).

  • If I move, I'd have to wait until a more reasonable time, probably around June, to start apartment hunting in a new town. This will make it much, much harder to find a place if I change my mind and decide to stay in my current city.

  • If the new job is in a different town, there might not be any public transit options.

  • Biking here is extremely iffy. Our drivers are hostile, there's not a lot of biking infrastructure, and the biggest problem is the weather is absolute shit 3/4 of the year. It would be really hard to bike consistently if my workplace doesn't have a shower, which doesn't seem to be something most places offer.

I don't know. I think right now I'm going to resign myself to the car and re-evaluate in another year or so. The good thing is the car is expensive enough that getting rid of it could justify living in a more convenient (expensive) place, while still lowering my expenses overall.
