Daily Headphone Purchase Advice thread (2016-04-13)

Hello guys, I'm currently using Sennheiser HD202, and I'd like to know if there's some cans that would be a significant upgrade over them, for 100£/125€.

What I'm looking for:

  • On-ear or over-ear.
  • No amp, and I'd like if I they could be driven fairly well by PC/phone.
  • Home use, no need for folding or portability.
  • I think confortable goes without saying? I mean I don't think there's somebody who wants unconfortable cans. :) FWIW, the HD202's are fairly ok; pressure is not too great, but being on-ear I have to take them off and rub my ears a bit after a few hours; otherwise can't complain.
  • Single-wire cable jack would be a bonus, because I could hook up a V-Moda Boompro mic and shoot two birds. But I'm not gonna sacrifice sound quality for this feature.
    • I should mention I'm not trying to find cans that are equally good at gaming/music; I just need a mic for TS/Skype, and being able to use a Boompro would save the need for a dedicated headset/money.
  • What I listen to: lots of hard rock & metal (including sludge & stoner ie. also need some nice bass, not just mids/treble), electronica (but I'm not a basshead ie. don't need my teeth to rattle), and jazz. I will also occasionaly listen to a wide variety of other genres (pop, rock, classic, blues, reggae etc.)

What I like about the HD202: frankly, I'm quite pleased with them. I got them because I saw phoneheads recommending them as a cheap hidden gem, and I'd have to agree with that. Can't really find anything wrong with them. Then again, I don't really have anything to compare them to.

I know that I'm supposed to go to a store and try some cans on, unfortunately my small town never has anything I want in stock, just flashy stuff for the crowds.
