Daily Headphone Purchase Advice Thread (2017-07-31)

Hi everyone, long time lurker, first time poster to the subreddit. I'll just cover the bases on my thought process. I feel like I really need some assistance, despite having done fairly extensive research.

  • Modi 2 DAC connected via USB, Asgard 2 amp. Not looking to change these.

  • Current go-to are a pair of BeyerDynamic DT880 Pros, but I want to move up in the world.

  • The cans will be used for all computer-related things, both gaming and listening. My musical taste leans toward hip-hop, funk, electronic, and R&B.

  • Ordering online. I don't know of anywhere nearby to go and audition cans unless I order and return, which I would prefer not to do.

  • I'm told the HD800S's are better for gaming and are more comfortable, which is a plus. But I'm also told they prefer a tube amp (which I don't own), high quality source material (which doesn't work for me because I listen to a lot of Youtube video music), and tend toward brightness, where I'm looking for cans that tend toward darkness, given my musical preferences.

  • I'm told the Audeze LCD-3 is darker and more forgiving of low quality sources, which is good, and I don't mind a heavy set of cans, but I know there have been reliability issues (is that still a thing?) and due to the decreased treble clarity are worse for gaming than the HD800S. I haven't heard anything about whether the LCD-3 is a good pick for a solid state amp like the Asgard2.

Is the LCD3 my best choice? Or am I making a mountain out of a molehill regarding the HD800S's needs? I'm willing to consider other options. Even less expensive if it's a good match for me. They BeyerDynamic DT1990's look interesting, too...
