The Daily Mail vs Basically Everyone Else

I used to work overnights in an economy hotel chain (I actually worked both of the ones you're thinking of, but this was specifically at the even more economy of the two). It was dead through the weeks (and a horror show of drunk/violent/abusive guests, drug addicts, and sex workers and their roided-up "handlers" on Friday and Saturday nights) so I would read, watch DVDs, and work on my uni assignments. The woman I worked with read the Daily Mail website the whole night. I'm talking from 11pm to 7am. Every. Single. Night. She would tut and shake her head every now and then and make me look at whatever "article" she was reading, and without fail it was a story about how good, honest, hard-working, common-sense, non-PC Britons were being taking advantage of by immigrants/welfare recipients/Muslims/loony lefties.

The persecution-complex has always been a go-to for the right, because you don't need Conservatives to protect you if there isn't some sinister "other" plotting against you, but the Mail is just so nakedly, unashamedly hateful in its denigrating and making into boogie men anything that's not white, male, heterosexual, and middle class (or rather, working class that have pretensions if being middle- and upper-class).

Its truly terrifying that the Mail is the most popular newspaper in the UK.
