Daily Questions & FAQ Megathread (Oct 02)

According to automod this is where I have to post this.....

As a new player to FFXIV, learning about the original FFXIV and how A Realm Reborn came from it, I really want to know... What was it like during that time for anyone who was there?

All throughout the story I've completed so far they always spoke of the calamity. Having played a couple FF games when I was younger I was not unfamiliar with the concept of near world ending calamities being the basis of a story before.

Then I found out that there was actually a FFXIV before the one I'm currently playing, and that this calamity ties in to the end of it... A bit more reading and I discovered that essentially people were unhappy with the game, they switched directors and essentially rebuilt the game completely. Current players were given access to the new game, their progress transferred over, etc.

I was always curious as to what it must have felt like being a player of the original game and realizing that essentially it was being shut down and a new and improved version would be left in it's place. I just watched the cinematic for ARR released in November 2012... WOW is all I can say. I can't imagine seeing that insane cinematic, recognizing so many characters and places, and realizing that the world I've been playing in is about to be destroyed, or "ended" from which a new "beginning" would arise from.

If you experienced it, or know the opinions of someone who did.... How much of a shock was it? How did you feel about it? How was the transition? Did it all make sense story wise up to that point? What was the story of the first game?

Thanks for your input, I'm really interested in what anyone has to say!
