Dan Murrell of Honest Trailers describes the response to their video on The Last Jedi as unlike anything he's seen before in terms of hatred towards the relevant film

Asking a question should not be downvoted. Warning, my detailed thoughts are long from all the drinking.

Before TLJ, I thought the state of Star Wars was shockingly stagnant. TFA and Rogue One felt underwhelming and uninspired because there was no passion or creativity driving the franchise into new unfamiliar territory besides fan service, nostalgia, and reverence for the past. Rebels filled some of the spark because they introduced new ideas and conflicts. The games were EA.

Then I go into TLJ expected a rehash of Empire Strikes Back, but entertained netherless. Then boom, I see TLJ has a sense of personality with Rian Johnson giving us his take on Star Wars by injecting what inspired him and George Lucas. Old and new films from WW2, westerns, samurai films, heists, Kurasawa flicks, and even anime.

What was shocking was that it was challenging me on what Star Wars was, what it can be, and what it can grow into. We could no longer rely on old tropes and it's strange meta take on the franchise really moved me, while at the same time felt organic and a needed evolution of a 40 year old franchise. My imagination was stimulated by the visuals and creativity while I felt inspired by the themes of "learning from failure", "Saving what you love", and "no one really is gone" in a time i needed it the most.

It ain't perfect if you look at some plot points and some hokey lines and moments, but I can't deny the emotions I felt watching it. I felt young again, I felt inspired, I felt like there were possibilities, it made me reflect on my apathetic disillusionment with life, and made me want to be like old Luke by finding peace and purpose.

TLDR; TLJ inspired and moved me at a time i needed it the most.
