Daniel Gonora and his son - Untitled street performance in Zimbabwe [Zimbabwean music] (2010s)

The style is called Chimurenga (struggle in Shona). It is adapted from Shona mbira (some people call them Kalimba or thumb piano) music. The primary innovators in the style were the guitar player Jonah Sithole and his singer Thomas Mapfumo. They were in Thomas Mapfumo and Blacks Unlimited. During the Second Chimurenga (what Rhodesians called the Bush War), this music, which was overtly political, became a symbol of Black liberation and was outlawed. It was broadcast from Mozambique and presumably Zambia. As I mentioned, the guitar technique derives from Mbira music. Another favorite of mine is the N'debele singer Albert Nyathi.
