I don't think they are actively discouraged from it anymore, but if science shows that there is room for improvement, then why not just do it. It doesn't hurt anyone. And if it's true that some men are still discouraged or looke down upon because of it then I would argue that that's a bad thing too and we should improve the situarion. The end goal is that people should be comfortable and happy with their career choices, I don't see how support for women in that field goes against that. It's just that women in these fields have some concerns that are different than those of men. Perhaps you are right and we should push back against the negative portrayal of STEM people in media no matter their gender.
