Dan's response to #GoldbergGate

Adam, if you're jetting out then I'm glad you're doing what's best for yourself, but I'm sorry to see you go all the same.

I only attended one Harmontown in person, the special Rick and Morty episode at the Largo. I happened to be in town in LA for a few days. When I was waiting on the urinal you were right the guy I was waiting on. I don't know why but I asked you if you were Adam Goldberg, whether I recognized your voice or just had an intuition, and all I remember is you saying yes and mentioning that you had to get in there to try to get a front and center seat. I don't remember if you flat out said it was so you could have a decent chance of getting on stage if the moment arose or if I just inferred it, but encountering you was memorable regardless.

Your presence of self and your participation in the show certainly don't require my two cents, but if this is a farewell then I guess I'll share them anyways. I don't generally care for hecklers but Dan, as is his right, has not lifted a finger to discourage audience interference and I like to think that if he'd actually put his foot down firmly then you would have respected that. You've pulled a lot of mischief, between tricking Erin into giving up her number to knocking on that Green Room door, but as far as I can tell you've never been malicious, and your guilt lies in the boldness of exploring a porous border whose keeper has refused to actively police it.

You've got a real strength of personality. It takes a lot of guts to play the heel, particularly when a significant number of the audience would rather you didn't but the star of the show is too ambivalent to ultimately put a foot down on one side of the line or the other. I won't weigh in on whether I think that it's laudable behavior or not, but you've been an indelible personality from the start. Whether awesome or annoying (and I'm not suggesting you fall into just one category), you've been utterly unique, and that quality matters more to me, personally, than just about anything. This podcast, for better or for worse, would have been more mundane without your presence.

I've been re-listening to old episodes for their DnD segments lately. As I listen to random people screaming "SQUID!" every time Sharpie considers a monster to summon for a land battle, aggressively booing every time anybody considers doing anything but a combat solution to some new encounter, or, bless her, Adrianne's /ceaseless/ feedback in the Charlotte episode of the tour, it casts your own unique brand of buccaneering, intense but fleeting commentary and stage-storming into relief, and I'll be damned if I don't prefer your impishness to the rest of the peanut gallery's every time.

Out of all that you've done you've earned many groans from the people on stage but, to my perception, not a single authentic growl. Or at least snarl. You've put more work into this community than most people, between founding this very subreddit and organizing what I understand to be two different anniversary quizzes, one of which was a major aspect of the 100th episode. For my money this podcast is going to be a more boring and less galvanized place without your presence, and I'm sorry to see you go. I'm not qualified to judge and I certainly don't, but when I think of your "sins" I can only think of banning Levi, for which you had the fortitude to talk about on stage and admit that you were wrong to do so.

I wish you all the best my friend. If I recall correctly you've mentioned some entrepreneurial ambition in the past related to something related to programming. I hope that we all have cause to recognize and celebrate your sharp mind and your fearless (perhaps to a fault) temperament when you resurface from the mists with something that pushes the envelope. Whatever envelope that may be.

You're no more nor less perfect nor blameless than any of us, but you are bold and that's more than many of us can say. Vaya con Dios.
