DarkNetPlan Is A Terrible Sub Name.

Haven't been here for years (AND AM IN NO WAY CURRENTLY INVOLVED AND HAVEN'T BEEN SINCE 2011) but saw this post and thought I'd reply, since, well, y'know, I made the original subreddit with this name.

I honestly can't for the life of me remember where I came up with the name Darknet Plan, but it was never intended to be a permanent name for the project. I also never expected it to grow at the rate it did in late 2011 with the rise of SOPA/PIPA protests. It went from under 800 subs to 20/30,000 in a matter of days, first with posts on Reddit and ArsTechnica and then more with the Forbes interview I did.

Following the Forbes article, the community discussed changing the name. We even asked the admins to see if they could merge subreddits for us with something like /r/meshnet, but found it not to be possible. As such, I believe the decision at the time was to not change subreddits because of the loss of subscribers and reach it would cause.

After a while, Project Meshnet and CJDNS/Hyperboria took over leadership and guidance of the movement and I bowed out due to a lack of the technical knowledge needed to get the project up and running. I believe at the time I left the community had decided to stop debating the name in order to get things done for real and focus on the technology.

I am also not likely to participate myself now, because of career restrictions. I'll just end by apologizing again for the difficulties my name choice caused for you all. The mods here today did not pick that name and it was solely my choice when I was a younger teen.

TL;DR: I created the subreddit forever ago, didn't expect it to get popular, name is my fault and can't(couldn't?) be changed by reddit without losing all of the subscriber base. Project Meshnet/Hyperboria took over leadership soon after and I haven't been involved since, but agree that the name I picked has problems as has been pointed out many times since I created it.
