In my experience the ethical salesman claim is a myth. You either push the boundaries or you end up falling by the wayside. Most of my best sellers didn't own or even use the products they were selling. They just knew how to manipulate others in a friendly but morally ambiguous fashion. That's not to say sales people are bad or that none of them deserve our respect, but making a lot of money in sales is the kind of thing an ethical person atones for rather than brags about. The power imbalance between people who sell and people who buy is enormous. Which is why I think everyone should have at least one sales job under their belt before they purchase anything that involves a title.
