Dave2D showcasing the new XPS 17 and XPS 15

Man, dell makes nice looking laptops! But, they feel a lot like the apple ecosystem ive worked so hard to keep myself away from. I type this sitting next to my XPS13 9300 that I havent used in days and am looking forward to shipping back in the morning for a refund.

Installing any OS aside from what these things are shipped with is an absolute nightmare. I tried the win10.iso from microsoft direct, 'media driver missing'. Could not get it to work. Worked just fine on other laptops. No issues at all, ive done it dozens of times.

Tried ubuntu 20.04 .iso from ubuntu direct and got kicked to grub cmd on boot.

Looked into dells recovery options and they have an ubuntu 18.04 image which works perfectly and thats well and good but uh.. what if I dont want ubuntu 18.04..? Is that not permissible on my own device?

Looked further at dells recovery to see if I could move between ubuntu and windows at least? Maybe I could salvage this thing and keep it.. Nope. Dells recovery image creation tool asks for service tag. Input service tag and im forced to select ubuntu 18.04

So, either reverse engineer a 2k device in the name of having the most premium object in the room or just buy a laptop that isnt so sensitive to being reimaged and comes with hardware that works without all this hullabaloo.. For me, the choice is unfortunate, but pretty easy. To each their own, they are very nice laptops. Im pretty disappointed, I was very excited to see the 2020 line of XPS laptops. They just dont fit my usage if my only means of reimaging the thing is through dell. Thats a corner i dont wanna be in with a 2k laptop.
